Uninstall Visual Studio Code

The steps for uninstalling Visual Studio Code will depend on your platform (Windows, macOS, or Linux) and the install option that you used. For example on Windows, you can use the System or User Windows Installers or download a .zip file and extract the contents anywhere on your machine.

In general, you would uninstall VS Code as you would any other desktop application and follow your platform’s recommended flow for uninstalling software. Specific platform guidance is provided below as well as how to completely clean up any remaining VS Code configuration files.

Windows

Windows Installer

If you installed VS Code via the Windows Installer, either the User or System version, use the installer to remove VS Code.

  • Start menu
    • Search for Add or Remove Programs and find Visual Studio Code in the Apps >Apps & features list.
    • Select Uninstall from the actions dropdown on the right side (three vertical dots).
    • Follow the prompts to uninstall VS Code.
    • Under Programs, select the Uninstall a program link.
    • Find the Visual Studio Code entry, right-click, and select the Uninstall command.
    • Follow the prompts to uninstall VS Code.

    .zip file installation

If you installed VS Code on Windows by downloading and extracting one of the .zip files found on the Visual Studio Code website, you can uninstall by deleting the folder where you extracted the .zip contents.

    macOS

To uninstall VS Code on macOS, open Finder and go to Applications. Right-click on the Visual Studio Code application and select Move to Trash.

    Linux

To uninstall VS Code on Linux, you should use your package manager’s uninstall or remove option. The exact command line will differ depending on which package manager you used (for example, apt-get , rpn , dnf , yum , etc.).

The names for the VS Code packages are:

    • code — VS Code Stable release
    • code-insiders — VS Code Insiders release

For example, if you installed VS Code via the Debian package ( .deb ) and apt-get package manager, you would run:

    sudo apt-get remove code

where code is the name of the VS Code Debian package.

    Clean uninstall

If you want to remove all user data after uninstalling VS Code, you can delete the user data folders Code and .vscode . This will return you to the state before you installed VS Code. This can also be used to reset all settings if you don’t want to uninstall VS Code.

The folder locations will vary depending on your platform:

    • Windows — Delete %APPDATA%\Code and %USERPROFILE%\.vscode .
    • macOS — Delete $HOME/Library/Application Support/Code and ~/.vscode .
    • Linux — Delete $HOME/.config/Code and ~/.vscode .

Since, you might already know the drill to uninstall and you are emphasizing on remembered its previous settings , please do the following:

    1. Open Run ( Win + R )
    2. Type %appdata%
    3. Press Enter
    4. Delete the folder Code

Voila! Restart Visual Studio Code and it is reset!

Here is a bat script which does the same thing:

    explorer.exe %appdata% del Code

P.S: Since, you want to uninstall go to Add or Remove Programs and click on bottom right of the Visual Studio Code tile, where it says Uninstall .

Create the bat file using notepad, give it a name and save it, it would work.

Do we have to restart Windows for it to take effect? I deleted the Code folder, but my machine still has it available as an app.

Extensions are installed inside C:\Users\USERNAME\.vscode We MUST also DELETE that folder.
    Jan 28, 2023 at 1:58

Here is the complete solution you can apply:

    1. Go to where Visual Studio Code is installed and invoke ‘uninst000.exe’. In my case it is installed in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Microsoft VS Code
    2. Delete directory %APPDATA%\Code
    3. Delete directory %USERPROFILE%\.vscode

I guess I should be smarter but I started at the top. DO NOT DELETE THE .CODE dir. It is for Visual Studio NOT VSCOde. I had several highly configured projects and ALL of their settings are lost.

    Aug 28, 2023 at 23:42

Turns out the extensions are stored under %USERPROFILE%\.vscode\extensions . Deleting that gets rid of them.

Since you use the word Completely, I would say

    1. Do the regular Uninstall in «Apps & features.»
    2. In strat, search «environment variable» and remove all the references for `Visual Studio Code or any installation path.
    3. In file Explore, type %APPDATA% and remove the folder called Code.
    4. And got to %LOCALAPPDATA% and deleted the folder code if it exists.
    5. Got to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming and remove the folder code

This will remove all your configurations and the extensions

The only thing that can asure any trace if a file is removed, go ahead to your sudo user

In ubuntu: sudo -i , others might use sudo — su

then you want to proceed with the global search, then you must run:

    find / -name «vscode«

You will probably end up having a lot of permission denied, but that’s ok. we don’t want to access them anyways.

Now you’ll end up with a big list of files to remove, so you can go one by one and ensure you’re in fact removing them OR.

you can just run find / -name «*vscode*» | grep vscode | xargs rm -rf

How to completely purge Visual Studio Code on Ubuntu?

I’m using VS Code on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and I want to completely uninstall it. So I’ve tried these commands:

sudo apt-get remove code sudo apt-get purge code sudo apt-get update

And every time when I re-install I see my project that was open from my last use and I still have all my plugins, my themes, keybindings, etc. What must I do to completely uninstall all settings of Visual Studio Code ?

User specific settings/extensions are located in $HOME/.config/Code and $HOME/.vscode/ so remove those folders manually

But isn’t this ridiculous. I mean purge command was specifically desgined to delete the config files and any other remnants of the app. Also, what’s with the ambiguity, at some places it is called «code», other places «vscode»

cd [enter] sudo rm -rf .vscode sudo rm -rf ~/.config/Code sudo apt purge code sudo apt autoremove

Why do you assume it is installed as a snap?
    Oct 8, 2021 at 0:40

cause while finding my question about how to uninstall .code I came to this link (StackOverflow) but I didn’t get my answer on StackOverflow I got this answer while trying a lot of things by self and it works for me. So I mention it here. I didn’t see the exact cmd(answer) up there. it works for me if it’s going to work for someone and save his/her time that’s good. It’s all my motto. If I do wrong please suggest to me how to improve my mistake.
