Welcome to the community. The issue is with the RTC clock hardware device. See details below:
https:/ Opens a new window / www.manualslib.com/ manual/ 1073383/ Dell-Powervault-Ml6000.html? page=349 The time will be correct until the device is powercycled. The RTC component should be replaced but doesnt affect how the system works. You should contact Dell if you have support on it so they can replace.

Thanks for the reply. Where is the RTC clock hardware located on the MD3200i? Is it on the controller(s) or elsewhere? The link was to a tape library but I assume that this error is similar across multiple Dell hardware? Unfortunately this hardware is no longer under a Dell support contract.

I am not sure where exactly on the board but it is on the Controller, see below how to synchronize the time on the controller: http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/md3200i_md3220i_owner%27s%20manual_en.pdf Opens a new window

Hello shawnchristie, As dbeato stated the RTC is on the controller. Also you want to see if you can try to sync the clocks first on the controllers to see they just got out of sync. If you are not able to get them to sync then there could be an issue with the RTC on the controllers. What is the version of firmware that you are running on your controllers? Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I don’t currently have access to the unit but I know the firmware hasn’t been updated since it was purchased 6+ years ago. So yes firmware is very outdated.
So just to confirm, this issue doesn’t effect normal operation of the unit in anyway? The only problem would be if it lost power, the clock would have to be reset when it gets powered back on. Certainly not a show stopper in my book since these are normally connected to UPS power and never powered off.

The RTC Clock won’t affect the functionality of the controller and the system will run properly. Just sync clocks when needed.

It’s surprising how bad the controllers on my MD3200i are at keeping good time. They can lose a minute every week and are usually off by a second or two just moments after a sync!
I use the Powervault Modular Disk Storage Manager to sync the clocks. Updated firmware goes a long way to improving the performance so you may want to look into that. Read the release notes carefully because if you are that far out of date, you have to apply bridge updates before getting to the most recent.

Disable CfS completely and check for any antivirus on systems.

Ok, I have updated the firmware but it didn’t clear the issue. RTC Error: Real-time clock device is not working OK.
also getting this: 11/15/16-22:13:45 (tSystem): ERROR: FPGA FW is out of date
Not sure if that one matters as I think it is for SSD. Here is current firmware versions:

RTC bad error, but not all the time
I have a Gigabyte Brix S that is used to run a kiosk type system and it is in a difficult to access location, of course.
Recently it started giving an RTC Bad error on startup so I took it out of the kiosk and powered it up on my work bench and it worked fine, no error. Ok, I put it back in the kiosk and started it up, RTC bad error.
Could this be related to input power — it has an AC adapter that appears to be working fine, surely it would complain if there wasn’t enough power.

If it has a CMOS battery, change it.

It’s the CMOS battery or RTC chip. It may work fine if it was just powered up before you rebooted due to residual charge/capacitors. It will fail more often when there is no power for some period of time.

Replace the CMOS battery, it’s a CR2032 button cell battery

It may be a CR2032 but there there are leads attached. See: https://www.joinfu.com/2018/06/how-to-reset-cmos-on-gigabyte-brix/ Opens a new window . You can buy them with leads attached as a direct replacement or depending on your skills and how the connections are made to the battery case you may be able to reuse the old leads.

Fessor that’s what I would have expected and has been my experience in the past 30 odd years of support, however in this case it is the reverse. The machine had been powered off for 9 or more hours, I retrieved it, put it on my workbench and powered on, no problems. Took it immediately back to it’s location in the kiosk and it failed — doesn’t make sense. I am going to see if I can meter out the power and run an extension cord from a separate outlet temporarily to test.

Couldn’t see to which of the currently 47 models you refer, nor which options you had selected to install. Not sure if this is relevant as it had worked as designed for a longer time or has worked accidentally as intended for a longer time.

Sorry, couldn’t follow. So despite the difficult to access location you decided to put it on your workbench due to this startup error. But I still didn’t get how you assessed it to work fine and if that working was as designed or just accidentally. Especially, I didn’t get which operating system it uses, nor its NTP client configuration, nor its age, nor its cooling system, fans and temperature sensors, nor if workload o workbench is identical to workload on normal placement. I fear that the NTP client configuration is incomplete, and workload, age and placement location may lead to temporary temperature issues with impacts on clocks. A proper NTP client configuration would help. And as other Spiceheads have already mentioned, the lifetime of the CMOS battery might come close to its end. Proper NTP client configuration does not extent the CMOS battery lifetime but it may partially compensate impacts on clocks. I would expect such a complemented configuration to give you several more weeks of operation, not months.

- If no source exists in Australia, which difficulties exist in either importing or asking a local shop to adapt existing parts and do the replacement?

Issue
When you turn your Toshiba computer on, you see an error message like:
**** Bad RTC battery **** **** Bad Checksum (CMOS) **** Check system, then press [F1] key
The Real Time Clock (RTC) battery provides power for the internal clock/calendar and for maintaining system configuration settings.
This error can occur when a machine has been left turned-off for an extended period of time ( approximately one to four months ), and it is the result of a depleted RTC battery. Other symptoms include not being able to execute Windows Update properly, errors/problems executing application software (like Norton Antivirus), and the appearance of the Windows XP «Desktop Clean Wizard».

Reset the BIOS defaults
-
Set BIOS defaults
- Double-click to open the «Unused Desktop Shortcuts» folder
- Click to expand the «Edit» menu, and click «Select All»
- Drag the selected items back to your desktop
- Close the «Unused Desktop Shortcuts» folder. You can delete this folder if it is empty.
- It works by allowing Windows components to be updated (or «patched») while they are still in use by a running process.
- There is no financial or similar info on it.
- Sometimes, the disk read https://driversol.com/dll/cyggcc-s-1_dll/ error occurred before system booting is the result that computer read wrong bootable hard disk.
-
Press the [F1] key as instructed in the error message:

Other Information:
If, on subsequent reboots, the "Bad RTC Battery" error persists, it’s quite likely that you actually do have a bad RTC battery. If that’s the case, you should contact a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider to have the system serviced.
Windows XP Desktop Cleanup Wizard
The first time you reboot Windows XP after resetting the system clock, Windows XP may try to run the «Desktop Cleanup Wizard». Simply Cancel the «Desktop Cleanup Wizard» at the first dialog.
If you do manage to clean your shortcuts from the desktop and want to recover them, you will find them in a folder called «Unused Desktop Shortcuts». You can recover them as follows:

Complete the following actions to verify the correct time zone is set and to toggle the Internet Time setting to improve the accuracy of the computer clock. Some computers can be configured to synchronize the computer clock to an Internet Time clock when the computer connects to the Internet. Synchronizing the computer clock with the Internet Time usually provides the most accurate method of keeping time and is normally recommended. However, in some cases, connecting to the Internet Time clock server may cause the computer clock to display the wrong time. Third-party programs or screen savers can cause the time to stop or decrease significantly.
Restart can solve most of computer problems, thus it’s worth to have a try. Restart your computer right now and check if the «Restart to repair drive errors» occurs. Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows 98 run ScanDisk automatically if the computer is shut down improperly. They do this to check if the hard drive encountered issues when the computer was improperly shutdown. There is no need to restart after running SFC Scannow, as the scan takes a few minutes and does not have any reboots.

If nothing worked so far, your best bet would be to reinstall Windows 11. We have written a handy guide on how to install Windows 11 from a USB drive, so follow it for detailed instructions. Note that this process will wipe just the C drive (which includes the files and folders in Desktop, Downloads, Documents, etc.) and will not affect other drives. This will try to fix the boot-related files and allow you to log into your Windows 11 PC. Open the “Wininit” entry and review the CHKDSK scan results. If Windows 11 says there are no disk errors, you are good to go.
